Golden Boy / Golden Boy

OVA series about an incredibly smart guy whose memory is truly boundless and whose virtue is beyond description. He keeps a diary, travels around Japan, learns everything he sees, and then uses his knowledge to help people.


The premise of this anime is so promising and captivating that you inevitably start expecting a real revelation from the authors, but instead, as usual, you get a fig. Unfortunately, all the setup of this story went to waste at the beginning of the first episode when Kentaro first saw a huge bouncing breast, the sight of which monumentally declared that you have another underdeveloped shonen series that brazenly masks its banal essence with a wise and amazing idea of virtue, justice, and intelligence. In reality, as subsequent episodes showed, there is none of that in "Golden Boy". A couple of times the authors used the hero's intelligence and virtue (the episode about the old folks, for example), but essentially their task from beginning to end was to show a not very smart story about crowds of girls and one boy kissing a toilet.


If "Golden Boy" did not claim to be a smart and instructive series, it could easily get a four for its wonderfully jiggling breasts and be placed in a group next to "Hot Summer" under the label "watch if there's no hentai", but as it is, only a three - for lack of expressiveness, formulaic nature of all six episodes, and also for the frankly secondary, uninteresting plot. Later, Fujisawa Toru will come up with his "Onizuka" - a hero somewhat similar to Oe Kentaro, but that story will be smart, instructive, interesting, without constant breast display - that will be real anime. And "Golden Boy" will remain a six-episode empty shell with big ambitions.
